HOUSES AND HOUSING Something you must keep in mind at all times is the level of the houses in the game, the villagers' lifespan is directly related to the level of their housing. For instance, if your houses are at the starting level, your villagers' lifespan will be very short. A great strategy to maximize resources at the beginning and progress quickly is to upgrade the houses as fast as possible. This will not only allow you to have more workers for basic businesses but will also extend the villagers' lifespan, resulting in food savings. Don't just build houses everywhere; you are going to need that space for other buildings later in the game. It is better to focus on upgrading the ones you already have due to several very useful factors throughout the game: the buildings and main roads (the ones the game starts with) will not degrade, so you won't have to spend resources repairing or eventually demolishing them. If you upgrade the houses and roads you started with, you won't have to be constantly repairing them. If you start clearing land and building houses everywhere just to get workers, you will eventually have to spend on maintenance. At the beginning, the best approach is to upgrade what you already have and expand from there. IMPORTANT THING TO CONSIDER Another important thing regarding houses is that upgrading them has two fundamental requirements: resources, obviously, but they must also meet certain criteria to be upgraded, and it's important to keep this in mind when planning construction and expansion. The required resources will increase and become more complex; I recommend upgrading all houses to level 2 before expanding further. It is also important to know that to upgrade a house, one requirement it will always ask for is the road level—you cannot upgrade a house to level 3 if the adjacent road is level 2. IMPORTANT: always remember to upgrade the roads so you can upgrade the houses and other structures as you expand. The time it takes to upgrade a building is directly related to its level; if you are upgrading a house to level 2, the construction time will be TWO HOURS; if you are upgrading it to level 3, THREE HOURS, and so on. MAXIMUM HOUSE LEVEL Unlike other buildings, houses can be upgraded up to level 10. This is very important because, as I said at the beginning, the villagers' lifespan is tied to the level of the houses. This means that if you have 6 houses at level 10, your villagers will have a life expectancy of 100 days, and you will have 60 villagers in your town. Of course, reaching that level at the beginning is not easy due to resources, but what I wanted to explain is that you don't need to have houses everywhere to have a large population with a long life expectancy for other industries. A good strategy is to have a few houses if possible but at the highest level possible. Enjoy the game.

This is a great reminder that upgrading houses is about much more than simply increasing population. I especially liked the explanation about focusing on the starting houses instead of building many new ones, since avoiding maintenance later is an advantage that new players can easily overlook. Planning road upgrades alongside house upgrades is another very useful tip.

One small but important addition. Unlike, say, Warehouse Houses offer two additional rooms immediately after the upgrade prosses have been started. So you don't need 10 hours while you House will be upgrded to level 10; you can hire new citizens immediately. And, again unlike other buildings, House during upgrade do not loose its capacity so your old people will not became homlell until upgrade will be finished.
